Hunting Safaris
Sandline is a member of Safari Club International (SCI) and supports responsible hunting, wildlife conservation, and the long-term future of hunting.
Sandline can also coordinate flight quotes and booking assistance alongside your safari, transfers, and accommodation. A small flight-arrangement service fee will be quoted and agreed before ticketing. Airfares are separate and subject to availability and airline terms.
Sandline is also currently working through the process of establishing an SCI chapter in South Africa, further strengthening the connection between our U.S. base, our South African roots, and the international hunting community.
For Sandline, hunting is not simply another travel product.
It is part of our background, our experience, and our commitment to responsible African hunting and the future of the hunting community.

First African Hunting Safari
Planning your first African hunting safari can raise plenty of questions. Sandline helps make the process clear, comfortable, and straightforward from the moment you begin planning.
01Which flights should I take?
We can help coordinate your international and domestic flight bookings around your safari, airport transfers, and accommodation. Tell us your departure airport, preferred dates, and travel class, and we’ll help find suitable options. A small flight-arrangement service fee is quoted and agreed before ticketing; airfares are separate. If traveling with a firearm, discuss your route with us before booking.
02Where do I stay before and after the safari?
We can arrange suitable airport or city accommodation before and after your hunt, with transfers coordinated around your flight times. Your written quote will identify the property, room arrangement, meals, and any additional charges.
03Who meets me at the airport?
For an arranged airport transfer, a designated driver or local representative will meet you at the agreed pickup point. We’ll confirm the meeting instructions, contact details, and onward transfer arrangements before you travel.
04Can I bring my own rifle?
We can help coordinate information with your hunting outfitter and an appropriate firearm-travel specialist. Bringing a rifle requires advance planning and the relevant airline, transit-country, and South African approvals and permits. Confirm the requirements for your exact route before booking; permit approval cannot be guaranteed.
05Can I rent a rifle?
We can request a suitable outfitter-provided rifle and ammunition for your hunt, subject to availability and applicable requirements. The outfitter will confirm suitability for your planned hunt, familiarization arrangements, and all rental and ammunition charges before you commit.
06What paperwork is required?
We’ll help you prepare a trip-specific checklist with the relevant travel and hunting specialists. Requirements depend on your nationality, itinerary, and activities, and may include passport and visa requirements, outfitter documents, hunting permits, and firearm-related documents if applicable. We’ll identify what needs confirmation; travelers remain responsible for valid documents and official approvals.
07What should I pack?
Start with comfortable neutral-colored clothing, layers for cool mornings and evenings, broken-in walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, binoculars, and your personal essentials. We’ll tailor the final packing list to your season, hunting area, lodge facilities, and airline baggage allowance. Ask your professional hunter to confirm any specialist hunting equipment before you pack.
08What happens to trophies?
Your professional hunting team will explain field preparation and the next steps for your selected animals. Sandline can help coordinate with independent taxidermy, dipping and packing, export, and shipping specialists. These services, permits, and destination import requirements are confirmed separately and may carry additional charges.
09Can my partner come?
Yes. We can plan for a non-hunting partner or companion and discuss wildlife viewing, sightseeing, cultural experiences, golf, fishing, diving, or time to relax. Available activities depend on the destination and schedule. Your quote will show companion accommodation and any separately priced excursions.
10Can I add a safari afterward?
Absolutely. We can build a wildlife safari or another African adventure around your hunt, including a proposed Kruger itinerary, golf, fishing, or diving where practical. We’ll coordinate the sequence, transfers, and accommodation and confirm availability and the additional cost in your personalized quote.
Clients don't need to arrive knowing how an African hunting safari works. Sandline helps answer these questions before they leave home.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED
1. How long should my first South African hunting safari be?
For most first-time visitors, we recommend seven to ten nights, allowing for approximately five to seven full hunting days. This provides enough time to settle in, confirm your rifle’s zero, hunt at a comfortable pace, and enjoy the wider African experience.
The ideal length will depend on the number of species on your wish list, the hunting area and whether you want to include a wildlife safari or another activity. Sandline will help design the right itinerary around your goals, available time and budget.
2. What is the best time of year to hunt in South Africa?
South Africa offers hunting opportunities throughout much of the year, but the most popular period is generally from April through September. These cooler, drier months usually provide comfortable hunting conditions, reduced vegetation and improved visibility.
May through August is particularly popular, so early booking is recommended. The best dates may vary according to the province, species, weather and availability.
3. Can Sandline help coordinate my flights?
We can help coordinate your international and domestic flight bookings around your safari, airport transfers, and accommodation. Tell us your departure airport, preferred dates, and travel class, and we’ll help find suitable options. A small flight-arrangement service fee is quoted and agreed before ticketing; airfares are separate. If traveling with a firearm, discuss your route with us before booking.
4. Can Sandline arrange accommodation before and after my hunt?
Yes. We can arrange hotel or lodge stays before and after your hunt, which is useful for recovering from long-haul travel, handling paperwork or extending your trip. Your itinerary will clearly state what is included and which extra nights or upgrades are available.
5. Will someone collect us from the airport?
Yes. Airport collection and return transfers can be included in your Sandline itinerary. A Sandline representative, professional hunter or approved transfer provider will meet you at the agreed airport and transport you safely to your accommodation or hunting destination.
Your confirmed itinerary will clearly state the meeting point, collection time and contact information.
6. Can my wife, husband or partner come if they do not hunt?
Absolutely. Non-hunting companions are very welcome. Sandline safaris are designed as complete African experiences, not only hunting trips.
Companions may join the hunter in the field, relax at the lodge or enjoy a separate program of activities. A non-hunting companion rate will be calculated according to accommodation, meals, transfers and selected experiences.
7. What can non-hunting companions do?
Available activities depend on the destination, but may include:
- Wildlife safaris and photographic game drives
- Cultural and community experiences
- Spa treatments and lodge relaxation
- Shopping, dining and sightseeing
- Golf
- Fishing
- Scuba diving and ocean experiences
- Birdwatching and nature walks
- Wine, food and scenic tours
Sandline can create a companion itinerary that works alongside the hunting schedule.
8. Can I add a wildlife safari?
Yes. A wildlife safari is one of the best additions to a hunting trip. Sandline can arrange private game drives, premium lodging and visits to carefully selected national parks or private reserves.
Depending on your route and available time, a safari can be added before or after the hunt. We can also create a longer itinerary that combines hunting with destinations such as Kruger National Park.
9. Can I combine hunting and fishing?
Yes. Sandline can combine hunting with freshwater, deep-sea or coastal fishing, depending on your destination, season and preferred species.
Fishing remains subject to local weather, water and sea conditions. We will build sufficient flexibility into the itinerary and clearly explain what is included.
10. Can I combine hunting and golf?
Yes. South Africa has exceptional golf courses, including several located near major safari and hunting destinations.
Sandline can arrange tee times, golf transfers, equipment requirements and accommodation. We can create a relaxed golf day for companions or build a complete hunting-and-golf itinerary for the group.
11. Can I combine hunting and scuba diving?
Yes. South Africa offers the unusual opportunity to combine a hunting safari with world-class African diving.
Sandline can arrange a hunting-and-diving itinerary that may include Sodwana Bay or another suitable diving destination. Diving is always subject to weather, sea conditions, certification level and operator availability. Non-divers can be accommodated with alternative activities.
12. Do you offer non-trophy or management hunting opportunities?
Yes, when suitable management animals and quotas are available. Management hunts focus on animals selected for responsible wildlife and habitat management rather than exceptional trophy characteristics.
These opportunities can provide excellent value while supporting sustainable conservation practices. Species, numbers, prices and availability vary, and all hunts are conducted in accordance with applicable regulations and the professional hunter’s management plan.
13. Do I need to bring my own rifle?
No. You may bring your own rifle or arrange to use a suitable rental rifle in South Africa.
Many experienced hunters prefer using their own familiar rifle. However, bringing a firearm requires advance planning, airline approval and a South African temporary firearm import permit. Sandline will provide guidance and coordinate with the outfitter, but the permit remains subject to approval by the relevant authorities.
14. Can I rent a rifle in South Africa?
Yes. Suitable hunting rifles can usually be rented through the outfitter by prior arrangement. Rifle models and calibers are subject to availability, and rental and ammunition are normally charged separately unless stated otherwise.
You will have an opportunity to become familiar with the rifle and confirm its zero before hunting begins.
15. What should I pack for a South African hunting safari?
We recommend practical clothing in neutral earth colors, suitable for layering. Your final packing list will depend on the season and hunting area, but normally includes:
- Two or three lightweight hunting outfits
- A warm jacket, fleece or sweater for early mornings and evenings
- A windproof or light rain jacket
- Comfortable, broken-in hunting boots
- Casual clothing for the lodge
- Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Personal medication and basic toiletries
- Binoculars and camera
- Small daypack
- Electrical plug adapter and charging equipment
- Copies of travel, insurance and firearm documents
- Soft rifle case for use in the hunting vehicle, if bringing a firearm
Laundry service is often available, so excessive luggage is unnecessary. Sandline will provide a destination-specific packing list before departure.
16. How are trophies prepared and shipped home?
After the hunt, trophies are field-prepared, tagged, and documented by the outfitter. They are then transferred to an approved taxidermist or dip-and-pack facility for the required preparation.
A licensed shipping agent coordinates veterinary documentation, export permits, customs clearance and international transportation. Protected or regulated species may require additional permits, and the rules of the destination country must also be followed.
Taxidermy, dip-and-pack work, crating, documentation, freight, customs charges and delivery are normally separate unless specifically included in the package. Sandline will help coordinate the process and keep you connected with the appropriate service providers, but preparation and shipping times can vary.
17. Can Sandline build a completely customized African safari?
We can combine hunting with wildlife safaris, golf, fishing, scuba diving, cultural experiences, photography, wilderness adventures and premium relaxation. Your itinerary can be built around your group size, interests, preferred accommodation, travel dates and budget.
Whether you are traveling alone, as a couple, with friends or as a private group, Sandline will create an experience designed around you:
Your Africa. Your group. Your adventure.
